Achieving Therapeutic Benefits from Outdoor Spaces
Here is a summary of what we talked about:
Research supports the idea that access to landscape and nature positively impact health. The use of biophilic design principles strengthen the connection to nature. This seminar provided information that demonstrates how outdoor environments benefit residents and staff, and how these environments can be designed more purposefully to further enhance the resident’s quality of life.
- Access to the outdoors (ease of doorways, visual connection, and comfort)
- Exercise opportunities (good surfaces, interesting destinations, activities)
- Social Support & Autonomy (seating choices, privacy opportunities)
- Engagement with nature (amount of green, deliberate landscape design, engage senses)
In conclusion, design matters! Deliberate design will maximize the benefits of outdoor spaces. We encourage social interaction and promote the benefits of engaging people with nature through biophilic design. Early integration of this philosophy into the interior and exterior design will achieve the most therapeutic benefits from these spaces.
