RESIDENTIAL QUADRANGLE, SOUTHWESTERN MICHIGAN COLLEGE

Location

Dowagiac, Michigan

Size

6 acres

Completed Date

August 2013

Arkos Design prepared options for the residential quadrangle that would create open areas for informal student play, a central area for gathering, and connections to the residence halls and the academic campus. The design and materials are complementary to the precedents set by the campus entrances and center-of-campus alumni plaza projects that form the framework for the new campus standards. The main connecting walk is split, creating an opportunity in the center for a berm with shade trees and two walls that curve into the berm for structured seating. Recessed wall lights accent their form and campus-standard pole lights ensure safe pedestrian travel. Sidewalks extend to the existing residence halls to create connectivity and frame the quad space.
