COMPTON FAMILY ICE ARENA LANDSCAPE, UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME

Location

Notre Dame, Indiana

Size

7.1 acres

Completed Date

2012

The Compton Family Ice Arena Landscape places a focus on large native plant installations in addition to the traditional campus landscape at the new hockey and ice arena.

The University of Notre Dame engaged Arkos Design to design the ice arena landscape, set along the prominent south edge of campus.  The extensive use of native plant materials is a first for the university.  Traditional campus plantings were interwoven with the natives to create a dynamic and flowing landscape that will require less water and long-term maintenance.  The traditional foundation plantings at the entryways provide a visual connection with the remaining campus landscape, while the native seed and plug installations encompass the building and provide unique focal areas through the use of native grass and wildflowers massings.  Irrigation was zoned to allow the native sections to be taken offline. The Compton Family Center achieved LEED Silver certification from USGBC.
